Ponduru is a village and Mandal headquarters in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, India, about 20 kilometers from Srikakulam Town.

Ponduru is world renowned for Fine Khadi, a symbol of India's independence. The entire process of manufacture — from the separation of the cotton to the spinning is done by hand. The villagers take pride in their knowledge that no advanced mechanised technology can replicate.

the finest khadi, woven , in Ponduru is famous among Khadi lovers of the entire country. Mahatma Gandhi is also said to have been surprised at the finesse of the Khadi produced here and he always preferred khadi from this village. Khadi from this region is exported to various countries like America, Denmark, Japan and Sweden.

Many of the world famous leaders ...Indian freedom fighter Gandhiji to former American president Bil Clinton were prized and wear the poduru khadi clothes .

Khadi was a part of Independence struggle in India. Mahatma Gandhi began promoting khadi in order to boycott the foreign clothes, Gandhiji called upon the people to make their clothes by themselves. Then Khadi symbolized the politicians. Most Politicians wear Khadi clothing in India. Khadi is an Environment and Eco friendly garment. In an aspect of degenerating environment, efforts are on to produce 100% Eco-friendly textiles where even the cotton will be grown without chemical fertilizers. But, surprisingly, this is already being done in India-in the form of Ponduru Khadi which is produced from wild varieties of cotton found in Ponduru, srikakulam dist in Andhra Pradesh which is in the South of India.

In India there are about 2000 khadi societies are present , out of these Ponduru khadi is the Number one like a moon in the Star galaxy . khadi industry now facing tough competition in Quality , Quantity and pricing . In 1949 the Andhra fine-khadi workers welfare society was formed and in 13/october /1955 own building foundation stone laid by Acharya Vinobabave.

Business & self employment :

the khadi industry began in 1971-72 with a turnover business of 5 lakhs rupees and now it reached to one Crore rupees . About 40 villages are involved with a strength of 1000 worker of self-employment . It is surprising that a fish bone is using to clean the cotton of fine-khadi here in Ponduru .

The present President of India " pratibha patil satisfied and praised about the fine khadi clotes of Ponduru . .. and ordered silk sarees of ponduru for her own use . The grand-daughter of Mahatma Gandhi is surprised on seeing the finess of khadi of ponduru . Akkineni Nageswrarao a telugu fomous cini hero of Olden days used to get clothes for him specially made border in his name . In 1972 former Indian prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi was most satisfied and used the Ponduru khadi clothes for her own .

* Ponduru is connected with railways. Ponduru railway station located on Howrah-Chennai mainline in East Coast Railway, Indian Railways.

ఆంధ్ర రాష్ట్రము లో ఖాదీ షాపులు :
కుంటుతూ నడుస్తున్న 'ఆప్కో' చేతిలో ఉన్న 'వూతకర్ర'ను సైతం ప్రభుత్వం లాగివేయడంతో... అది మరింతగా వూబిలోకి కూరుకుపోతోంది.కొన్నేళ్లుగా ఆప్కో వస్త్రాలపై ఇస్తున్న రాయితీని ఇటీవల ప్రభుత్వం ఉపసంహరించడంతో... రాష్ట్ర వ్యాప్తంగా చేనేత వస్త్ర విక్రయాలు దారుణంగా పడిపోయాయి. ఒకప్పుడు ఎంతో ప్రతిష్ఠాత్మకంగా ప్రారంభించిన ఆప్కో సంస్థ భవితవ్యం చిక్కుముడి పడింది. చేనేత వస్త్రాలపై రాయితీని ఎత్తివేయడంతో అమ్మకాలు లేక ఎక్కడ చూసినా దుకాణాలు బోసిపోతున్నాయి. ఉదాహరణకు రాజధాని నడిబొడ్డున లక్డికాపూల్‌లో ఉన్న ఆప్కో చేనేత వస్త్ర దుకాణం ఎప్పుడూ కొనుగోలుదారులతో కళకళలాడేది... గత మూడు రోజులుగా అమ్మకాలు పూర్తిగా తగ్గిపోయాయి. నిన్నమొన్నటి వరకూ ఈ దుకాణంలో రోజుకు రూ.20 వేల సరుకు అమ్ముడుపోయేది. అలాంటిదిప్పుడు రోజుకు వెయ్యి రూపాయలు విక్రయాలు జరగడం గగనంగా ఉంది. ఇదొక్కటే కాదు... రాష్ట్ర వ్యాప్తంగా మరో 185 ఆప్కో దుకాణాల్లోనూ ఇదే పరిస్థితి. ఈ నెల మొదటి తేదీ నుంచి ఆదాయం పదో వంతుకు పడిపోవడంతో ఆప్కో ఉద్యోగ వర్గాలు ఆందోళన వ్యక్తం చేస్తున్నాయి.

రాయితీనే ఆసరాగా: గత పదేళ్లుగా... ఆప్కో పర్వదినాల సమయంలో 30 శాతం, మిగిలిన సమయాల్లో 20 శాతం రాయితీపై వస్త్రాలను విక్రయిస్తోంది. నాణ్యమైన చేనేత వస్త్రాల లభ్యత దృష్ట్యా వినియోగదారులు పెద్దఎత్తున వీటిని కొనుగోలు చేస్తున్నారు. ఏటా రూ.60 కోట్లకుపైగానే విక్రయాలు జరుగుతున్నాయి. చేనేత కార్మికుల ద్వారా వస్త్రాలను తయారు చేయించి, కొనుగోలు చేసి తమ దుకాణాల్లో విక్రయిస్తున్న ఆప్కో వాటి ద్వారా వచ్చే ఆదాయాన్ని కార్మికులకు వేతనాలుగా చెల్లిస్తోంది. వినియోగదారులను ఆకర్షించేందుకు చేపట్టిన రాయితీ పథకంలో ఆప్కోకి ఏటా రూ.12 కోట్ల భారం పడుతోంది. అయిదేళ్ల కిందట వరకు ఈ భారాన్ని ప్రభుత్వమే భరించేది. ఆ తర్వాత ఈ పథకానికి నిధులను నిలిపివేసింది. ప్రభుత్వం మొండిచేయి చూపినా అటు కార్మికులు, ఇటు వినియోగదారులను దృష్టిలో పెట్టుకొని ఆప్కో రాయితీని కొనసాగిస్తోంది.

భయపెట్టిన భవిష్యత్తు: ఎలాంటి నిధులూ ఇవ్వని పరిస్థితిలో మున్ముందు తమపై భారం పడుతుందన్న ఉద్దేశంతో ఈ రాయితీని నిలిపివేయాలని ఇటీవల ఆప్కోని ఆదేశించింది. దీంతో ఆప్కో అధికారులు ఈనెల మొదటి తేదీ నుంచి దుకాణాల్లో రాయితీని పూర్తిగా నిలిపివేశారు. ఉత్పత్తి ధరలకే విక్రయించాలని ఉద్యోగులను ఆదేశించారు. రాయితీని ఎత్తివేసిన మొదటి రోజు నుంచే విక్రయాలపై ప్రభావం కన్పించింది. వినియోగదారుల సంఖ్య తగ్గిపోవడం... అమ్మకాలు పడిపోవడం వెన్వెంటనే జరిగిపోయాయి. రాయితీ లేదని తెలుసుకున్న వినియోగదారులు వెంటనే బయటకు వెళ్లిపోతున్నారని హైదరాబాద్‌లోని ఒక దుకాణం మేనేజర్‌ తెలిపారు. వస్త్రాల నాణ్యత గురించి ఎంతగా వివరించినా... రాయితీ లేకపోవడాన్ని వారు నిరసిస్తున్నారని వెల్లడించారు. ఆషాఢ మాసంలో వస్త్రాల అమ్మకాలు ముమ్మరంగా సాగుతుంటాయని, ఇప్పుడు రాయితీ లేకపోవడంతో సందడి పూర్తిగా తగ్గిందని ఆప్కో ఉద్యోగులు వాపోతున్నారు. ప్రభుత్వ నిర్ణయాన్ని ఒకవైపు ఉద్యోగులూ, మరోవైపు వినియోగదారులూ జీర్ణించుకోలేక పోతున్నారు. ఒకవైపు చేనేత వస్త్రాలను కొనాలని చెబుతూ, మరో వైపు రాయితీ ఎత్తివేయడం ఎంత వరకు సమంజసమని ఓ వినియోగదారుడు విమర్శించారు. ధరలు విపరీతంగా పెరుగుతున్న ఈ రోజుల్లో తాము రాయితీని ఆశిస్తామని, అదే లేకపోతే మరో చోటుకు వెళతామన్నారు.

అమ్మకాలపై ప్రభుత్వానికి నివేదిక
రాయితీ ఎత్తివేత వస్త్రాల అమ్మకాలపై తీవ్ర ప్రభావం చూపడంతో ఆప్కో అధికారులు గత మూడు రోజుల అమ్మకాలపై శనివారం ప్రభుత్వానికి నివేదిక పంపారు. ఆప్కో దుకాణాల్లో ప్రస్తుతం రూ.54 కోట్ల వస్త్ర నిల్వలు ఉన్నాయి. రాయితీతో వీటిని రెండు నెలల్లో విక్రయించాలన్న ఆప్కో లక్ష్యం నెరవేరే పరిస్థితి కనిపించడం లేదు. రాష్ట్రవ్యాప్తంగా ఆప్కో దుకాణాల్లో సగటున రోజుకు 25 లక్షల చొప్పున విక్రయాలు జరుగుతుంటాయి. సబ్సిడీ ఎత్తివేత ఫలితంగా జులై ఒకటి నుంచి 3 వ తేదీ వరకూ అమ్మకాల తీరు ఈ విధంగా ఉంది.
