Geography

Tekkali is located at 18°37′00″N 83°14′00″E / 18.6167°N 83.2333°E / 18.6167; 83.2333. It has an average elevation of 27 meters (91 feet).

* Tekkali is connected with Naupada-Gunupur branch railway line and National Highway-5. Nearest mainline station is Naupada Junction and people prefer Naupada Junction station for catching long distance trains.

* Telineelapuram village near Tekkali has famous bird sanctuary. Many pelican birds from Siberia visit Telineelapuram area every year.

* Area Hospital, Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhana Parishad is located at Tekkali. It has a bed strength of 100 in-patients.

* There is a Government Degree College, Andhra University affiliated which is very old and famous college in Tekkali.
* There is an engineering college called Aditya Institute Of Technology and Management also known as AITAM situated in kotturu which is a 15min drive from tekkali.

Zamindars of Tekkali:

The early rulers of Tekkali Belonged to the Kadamba dynasty.As the last ruler was issueless, the estate was taken over by the East India Company and was declared as a haveli estate. it was later purchased by the Rajah of Paralakhemundi for his brother. The estate was later divided into Tekkali and Nandigram. The Zamindar of Tekkali had only two daughters, one married to theraja of Sukinda and another to Sri Chaitanya Chandra Harichandan Jagadeb the Rajah of Athagada in Ganjam belonging to the Baghel dynasty of Kshatriyas. When Brundavan Chandra Harichandan was born, both his father and maternal grandfather were dead, therefore he was declared as the heir to the Tekkali zamindary. Brundavan chandra had two sons: Lakshminarayan Harichandan and Gopinath Harichandan and Balunkeswar Harichandan (who died at an early age). The Tekkali estate was divided among the two brothers, and they were designated as the Senior Zamindar and Junior Zamindar respectively. Raja Laksminarayan was a member of the Madras Legislative Council. He has written several books, articles, historical research papers, stories and poems in English, Sanskrit, Telugu and Oriya. He had one son, Govind chandra Harichandan and one daughter. Govind chandra is survived by his son Durga Prasad Deb.

Raja Gopinath Harichandan had three sons:Ramachandra Harichandan and Gopinath Harichandan (issues from the first wife) and jagannath Harichandan or Jagannath Deo Varma (issue of second wife). Raja Madhusudan Harichandan Jagadeb the last surviving zamindar of Tekkali is an Advocate in the Supreme Court of India. He has two sons and three daughters:Jujutshu Kumar Deb and Lalit Kumar Deb and three daughters: Vedasree Kumari, Kalasree Kumari and Padmasree Kumari. Lalit Kumar is presently Professor cum Principal of Lingaraj Law College at Berhampur. Raja Jagannath Deo Varma was a poet and violinist. He was a disciple of Dwaram Venkateswar Rao of Vizianagaram and has given several recitals in the All India Radio. He has two daughters:Nadasree Kumari and Lasyasree Kumari and two sons: Kundendu Kumar Deo and Subhendu Kumar Deo.
